Sagamihara City’s mayor is leading a petition drive calling for early resolution of issues involving nearby U.S. military bases, city officials said.

Among the issues: aircraft noise and unconfirmed Japanese media reports that the U.S. Army’s I Corps Headquarters may relocate to Camp Zama, Japan.

A group of city officials and residents, led by Mayor Isao Ogawa, began Sunday to collect residents’ signatures, the officials said. The campaign is to end July 15. The petition and signatures will be submitted to Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. Officials said the group hopes to collect the signatures of 200,000 residents.
