CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Marine Corps Community Services is inviting everyone on Okinawa to Oktoberfest this weekend on Camp Foster’s parade field.
The free festivities are to take place from 3 p.m. to midnight Saturday and 1 to 10 p.m. Sunday.
The festival will offer entertainment, game booths, amusement rides, a “kiddie land,” a variety of cultural foods and live bands. This year’s performers include the Latin-funk beat of Paris Escovedo and three alternative rock bands: SR-71, Plunge and Soul’d Out.
Also part of this year’s Oktoberfest is Recycle Wars II, a competition between Marine Corps units. The object is to build a vehicle out of recycled material and run the vehicle through an obstacle course. The prizes are $500 for first place, $300 for second and $200 for third. The winnings are to be donated to each team’s unit Marine Corps Birthday Ball fund. The races will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Sponsors Omega World Travel and United Airlines will give away two round-trip tickets to any U.S. destination.
Another winner will drive home in his or her prize as MCCS and BC Used Cars give away a “truckload of fun” Saturday. Fifteen keys will be given to AFN 89.1 listeners who qualified for the giveaway of a 1996 Suzuki Escudo, but only one key will start the vehicle. If the winner is an MCCS Club Card holder, he or she also will take home the truckload portion of the contest: a Tsunami Gear gift pack and $500.
