SEOUL — Hanam city residents are upset over Ministry of National Defense plans for a U.S. base that is to close later this year.

City officials had hoped to buy the land where Camp Colbern sits to build a home for the elderly, an English-speaking village for children and camping sites.

But MND officials announced on Aug. 19 that the Korean army’s 55th Division would take over the camp.

MND spokesman Lt. Col Kim Nak-jung said Wednesday that the decision was made because the army division needed the base.

City official Shin Woo-chul said residents were upset at the news.

“People cannot stand anymore for this absurd measure MND has taken,” Shin said.

He predicted protests if MND goes forward with its plans.

Kim said his organization is discussing the issue with local residents.
