Support our mission

Construction worth about $588,000 is to begin Monday to enhance security at RAF Mildenhall’s main gate.

The project, in coordination with the Air Force’s Smart Gate program, includes the installation of four final denial barriers that will reinforce the air base’s perimeter, according to a 100th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs news release.

Completion is expected in mid-November. Until then, motorists will be redirected to an identification checkpoint away from the canopy-covered entry control point, while the visitor control center and search barn will remain open.

New traffic signs and road markings will assist drivers with the detour, the news release said.

Funeral service to be held for Army employeeA funeral service will be held Friday for Michael Casey, a longtime civilian employee at U.S. Army Garrison Hessen who died Sunday of lung cancer. He was 61.

Casey began working for the military in 1984 as a clerk in Hanau, Germany, and held various supply and contract positions. In 1993, he became a logistics management specialist in the Directorate of Resource Management and for the Government Relations Advisor — a position he held until his death.

Co-workers said Casey was regularly recognized by U.S. officials for his work, and was a well-liked and respected staff member.

Casey, who was born in Birmingham, England, died at his home in Schöneck-Büdesheim, Germany. He is survived by his wife, Renate, and son Leo.

Friday’s service will begin at 2 p.m. at the Neuer Friedhof cemetery in Schöneck-Büdesheim.

New organization to throw kick-off partyThe African-American German Exchange, a newly formed organization promoting black culture and awareness, particularly for children of mixed racial backgrounds, will hold a kick-off party Sept. 22 in Frankfurt.

“African-Americans face a lot of prejudice and difficulties where identity is concerned,” said founder Gaby Blam.

“We want to help them be proud of their heritage and counteract the image of blacks as only entertainment and sports icons.”

The public event, which will feature live music, will be at the Licht-und Luftbad in Niederrad. Attendees are asked to register in advance and provide a $10 donation for food and drinks.
