Kadena Air Base’s Gate 1 is closed to outbound traffic until further notice for construction.

According to a base news release, inbound traffic at Gate 1 will not be affected.

To help move traffic leaving Kadena, Gate 5 will be open, though officials ask drivers to be aware of pedestrians, because the gate is near a school.

All other gates will operate normally, the release said.

School announces new drop-off rulesZukeran Elementary School on Camp Foster will have new rules for dropping off and picking up students beginning Nov. 19, according to a school news release.

The change is due to safety concerns.

From 7:15 to 7:45 a.m. and 1:30 to 2 p.m., the school’s entrance loop will be open only for the cars of Zukeran staff and parents of preschoolers, Sure Start students, kindergartners and first-graders and children with disabilities. Older students riding with eligible students are permitted to be dropped off at the same time.

To be permitted loop access, a parking pass will be issued to parents by their child’s teacher. Officials expect the passes to be ready next week.

Parents dropping off and picking up second- through sixth-graders by car must use an alternate site off school grounds. Officials suggested such alternate sites as curbside on First Marine Division Street, Tower Building 26 or the Youth Center, the release said. Students can then walk to school using designated sidewalks and crosswalks.

The school’s entrance loop will be open to all cars at all other times.
