Briefs: III MEF commander nominated for new post
President Bush has nominated the commander of III Marine Expeditionary Force for a new post. Lt. Gen. Joseph F. Weber has been nominated as the commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command, based in Norfolk, Va.
MARFORCOM works with Joint Forces Command to provide Marine forces to joint operations across the globe to include operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and hurricane relief. Weber has served as III MEF commander since August 2005.
To replace Weber, Bush has nominated Maj. Gen. Richard C. Zilmer to be promoted to lieutenant general and appointed the new III MEF commander. Zilmer returned from Iraq earlier this year after serving as commander of Multi-National Force — West. He is currently deputy commander of I Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and he is also commander of I Marine Expeditionary Brigade.
Kadena conducting readiness drillsKADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — Sirens, loudspeakers, groundburst simulators and smoke canisters will be going off Wedesday as the base continues an operational readiness exercise this week, according to a press release.
Officials said the training devices will be placed so that there will be no adverse effect on surrounding communities
The exercise began Monday and is to conclude Friday. The routine training is done to evaluate the air base’s ability to respond to contingencies, the release said.
