The commander of the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath, England, will relinquish command early next month.

Brig. Gen. Robert. P. Steel is slated to step down June 5 during a change of command ceremony. Steel will take over as commandant for the National War College at the National Defense University at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C. He will be replaced at the 48th by Brig. Gen. John W. Hesterman III, currently the deputy director, Legislative Liaison, for the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force at the Pentagon.

In other general officer news out of U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Maj. Gen. Eric J. Rosborg will assume the position of chief of the Office of Defense Cooperation, Turkey, for the U.S. European Command in Ankara, Turkey.

Alitalia’s cabin crews call 24-hour strikeItaly’s government-owned airline will stage a 24-hour strike starting May 21, according to Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation. Alitalia’s cabin crewmembers have called the strike to protest employment contracts. The government is in the midst of a bidding war to sell its 49 percent share of the fledging airline.
