Briefly: America Supports You outlines 2006 accomplishments
America Supports You, a Defense Department support system for organizations that wish to show their support for the U.S. military, released its list of accomplishments for 2006 on Thursday.
According to its news release, America Supports You has grown to nearly 250 member organizations and more than 33 corporate sponsors since its November 2004 launch.
America Supports You helped and publicized organizations that, for the year:
shipped more than 6 million care packages to the troops;raised nearly $3.5 million in financial support for servicemembers and their families;mailed more than 3.4 million cards and letters of support;delivered more than 500,000 books to deployed troops;greeted more than 75,000 troops returning home from deployment;and built or remodeled more than 25 homes for wounded veterans.For more information, or to learn more about how you can support military personnel, go to: www.AmericaSupportsYou.mil
Federal workers get day off to remember FordNon-essential U.S. government employees do not have to report to work Tuesday as the federal government has called for a remembrance day of former President Gerald Ford.
Ford, the nation’s 38th president, died Tuesday at his home in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He was 93.
On Friday, President Bush ordered a day of mourning for Ford. A state funeral will take place Saturday in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C.
