Navy Adm. Gary Roughead has been nominated to become the new Chief of Naval Operations.

Roughead is currently serving as commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, Norfolk, Va.

Stars and Stripes reported July 26 that Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates was recommending that President Bush nominate Roughead.

If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Roughead would replace Adm. Michael Mullen.

Mullen attended confirmation hearings this week to become the new chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Roughead has been head of Fleet Forces Command since May 17. His prior commands include commandant of the U.S. Naval Academy and commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Joint Task Force 519.
