A 1st Infantry Division soldier died and two others were wounded in an ambush Wednesday near Samarra, Iraq, 1st ID officials said.

According to the division’s daily briefing report, a homemade bomb blew up next to a patrol as it drove outside the city at 5:28 p.m. Then, anti-coalition guerrillas opened fire with small arms. Soldiers in the convoy returned fire, wounding three enemy fighters.

The wounded soldiers were evacuated to a coalition hospital, the report said. Their names, and that of the soldier who was killed, are being withheld until relatives can be notified. The report did not list their unit. The enemy fighters were treated for their wounds and are being held for questioning.

The ambush came less than three hours after a mortar attack near Samarra killed an Iraqi girl and injured two other children. Iraqi police took all three children to a hospital in the city. The report said no 1st ID soldiers were in the area at the time.
