Baumholder-based soldier dies from non-combat-related injuries in Afghanistan
A Baumholder-based soldier died Saturday from injuries suffered in a noncombat-related incident in Afghanistan, the Defense Department said Monday.
Capt. Michael W. Newton, 30, of Newport News, Va., died in Faryab province, according to a DOD news release. No additional details were given.
Newton was assigned to 1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery Regiment, 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Newton’s death is the fourth for the brigade, which deployed to Afghanistan in February for a 12-month tour.
A memorial for Newton will be held in the chapel at Baumholder at a yet to be determined date, an Army spokesman said.
