Bar Sleuth: Wing it to The West End

FELTWELL — Directly on the other side of a barbed-wire fence bordering RAF Feltwell sits a pub named The West End.
Besides being a popular watering hole among locals and airmen stationed at the nearby base, the pub is known for its food, owner Tracy Hewitt said.
Every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, the pub offers a carvery, which is a buffet of roast beef, pork or chicken with all the fixings, for a mere 5.50 pounds.
Besides that, the pub’s menu is filled with steaks from about 9 pounds, main courses from 7 pounds, and vegetarian and children’s meals.
“This is the only pub in the village that is open all day,” Hewitt said proudly, adding that it is also the only one in town that can serve alcohol until 2 a.m.
Although food is No. 1 at The West End, its selection of spirits should not be overlooked. More than 40 bottles of liquor hang from behind the bar. Some are of the same brand, but there is still enough of an assortment to please any spirits aficionado.
The average price of spirits is about 1.65 pounds. Pubgoers on a mission can take advantage of the special on house vodka, whiskey, brandy and gin, where a double of the stuff will cost about 2 pounds.
There are 10 beers on tap that range about 2 pounds a pint. Eleven more beers in bottles and 18 types of wine are available as well.
Inside The West End, there are three rooms. Through the front door is the barroom, where couches and pine furniture line the walls. A dartboard hangs straight ahead in the corner and a full-service bar is to the right.
Wall decorations are lacking, but a photo of an F-15 fighter jet autographed by the 48th Fighter Wing commander and vice commander is displayed on one of the walls.
Through another door is the newly remodeled billiards room and further down is the dining room where the carvery magic happens.
Regularly, the pub has live performances, from live soft rock bands to solo artists, karaoke, and billiard and dart tournaments, Hewitt said.
As always, if you drink, do so responsibly. Don’t drink and drive.
