MILDENHALL — It’s shortly after 5 on a mid-May afternoon. Work is complete for the week, but there’s a few hours before anyone will meet up for a night out.

Now that the weather has finally broken, it’s the perfect time to take a pint on the lawn of a local beer garden. And there are few places more convenient than The Globe to pass an hour or two.

About a mile from RAF Mildenhall, The Globe has a spacious back lawn complete with about a half dozen picnic tables and a children’s play area. The lawn stretches out over nearly half an acre and provides an idyllic setting to lean back, take a sip and listen to the birds chirp.

In short, if feels a million miles removed from the frenzy of the flight line.

Americans in the area might recognize the bar from its high concentration of motorcyclists gathered in the parking lot.

It’s become the area’s unofficial haunt for bikers in search of refreshment and camaraderie. Bikers, in fact, organize their outings to the local public house via an Internet site.

“We’re known as a biker-friendly pub,” bartender Davida Brown said.

Brown said that despite the pub’s reputation, it’s still a friendly place to relax with the family.

“We accept all ages and consider ourselves a family-run pub,” she said. “It’s a good, friendly, family atmosphere.”

The interior of the pub is largely nondescript: a handful of wood tables, a fish tank and two bars — one to service the interior of the pub and the latter in the rear of the building to keep outdoor patrons satisfied.

The back lawn, too, would be difficult to describe outside of its simplicity: an open lawn with room to stretch your legs.

So if you’ve got an hour to kill and want to enjoy the leisurely pace of Suffolk pub life in the spring, pop into The Globe for a cold brew and a relaxing afternoon on the lawn.

As always, if you drink, do so responsibly. Don’t drink and drive.

The Globe

Location: 21 The Field, which is the main drag in Mildenhall about a mile from RAF Mildenhall.

Drinks: Eight beers on tap, including three bitter ales.

Food: The only grub is the Sunday roast from noon to 3 p.m.

Ambience: The lack of annoying music gives way to the chirping birds on the back lawn, a great place to down a pint and watch the afternoon drag by.

Service: Two bars make for an expedient experience.
