Bamberg soldier dies in U.S. after returning from Iraq
A soldier from the Bamberg, Germany-based 54th Engineer Battalion has died in the United States after returning from a yearlong deployment to Iraq, officials said Friday.
Pfc. Perry M. Booth, 21, of the 54th’s Company B, died while on block leave, unit officials said.
“He passed away on leave. We don’t have the circumstances yet. It’s being investigated by civilian authorities,” said Capt. Brian Pugh, commander of the battalion rear detachment.
Further information was unavailable because the battalion was released early Friday to participate in a postwide welcome-home ceremony on Warner Barracks.
A memorial service for Booth has been scheduled for Thursday at 1 p.m. at Bamberg Chapel.
