Dorrance Smith, assistant secretary of defense for public affairs, is stepping down.

Smith made the announcement Monday, said Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman.

“Dorrance Smith has indicated to his staff today that he plans to go back into the private sector, that he has largely accomplished what the secretary has asked him to do,” Whitman said. “He has had some discussion with the secretary as perhaps staying on as an adviser of some sort, the details of that haven’t been worked out.”

Asked if any specific incident or development prompted Smith to leave, Whitman shook his head no. Smith is expected to leave about the end of the month, Whitman said.
