A soldier from U.S. Army South in San Antonio was killed this week in an incident in Guatemala that left three other GIs injured.
The soldier wasn't identified, but he was assigned to the 56th Signal Battalion at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, the command said Wednesday.
He was killed Tuesday and the other soldiers injured during an engineer project when a large tree branch fell on them.
The incident occurred during “Beyond the Horizons,” an exercise two hours outside Guatemala City.
“At the current time, they haven't identified why the tree branch fell,” Army South spokesman Andy Ortegon said.
The soldiers were evacuated to Mega Medica Hospital in Zacapa, Guatemala aboard a Black Hawk helicopter. An Army South release said the incident was being investigated, and that no other details would be immediately released.
