The North Carolina National Guard will rename one of its facilities in Moore County in honor of a local fallen soldier.

The Southern Pines Soldier Readiness Center at 510 Morganton Road will be rededicated as the Staff Sgt. Michael Voss Readiness Center during an 11 a.m. ceremony on Wednesday, according to the North Carolina National Guard.

Maj. Gen. Greg Lusk, the adjutant general of North Carolina, and other state dignitaries will be on hand for the ceremony.

Voss was a member of the Guard’s 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team during a 2004 deployment to Iraq. Voss, 35, was killed Oct. 8, 2004, when his convoy was struck by an improvised explosive device near Tikrit, Iraq.

The Carthage soldier had served in the Army since 1988, with more than nine years on active duty and seven years with the North Carolina National Guard. He was a veteran of operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield and had been awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in Panama in 1989.

In his civilian life, Voss worked for Caterpillar Inc. in Sanford, helping design and plan an assembly line for small construction equipment.

At his funeral, Voss was remembered as a man who loved to fish, hunt and build things. But above all, family members said, he “had a caring heart, and he loved to help people.”

According to the North Carolina National Guard, Voss was a recipient of numerous military awards, including two Purple Hearts, four Army Achievement Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, three Army Good Conduct Medals, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, the Saudi Occupation Medal, the South West Asia Medal with two bronze stars, the Desert Storm Ribbon, the Overseas Ribbon, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the two Combat Infantryman Badges and the Parachutist Badge with Combat Distinguishing Device.
