A Fort Drum, New York, soldier died Monday in Afghanistan of noncombat injuries.

Spc. Terry J. Hurne, 34, of Merced, California, died in Logar province, the Defense Department announced Tuesday.

He served with the 710th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

His father, Norman Hurne, told the Merced (California) Sun-Star that his son was scheduled to return around July 4.

“He couldn’t discuss what he was doing over there, but he was looking forward to getting out of there,” Mr. Hurne told the newspaper. “He was trying to make the best of every day.”

His deployment was the second of his seven-year career.

In addition to his father and other family members, Hurne leaves behind his wife of eight years, Natalie.

His death was not connected to the deaths of five soldiers in a "friendly fire" incident in southern Afghanistan hours apart that day.
