Army soldier charged in convenience store armed robbery

SWANSEA, Illinois — An Army soldier has been charged after federal investigators said he robbed a Swansea convenience store at gunpoint in October.
Denzell D. Grant, 19, who is based in Fort Hood, Texas, but is from South Carolina, pointed a handgun at a clerk at Mac's One Stop Shop and demanded money. He was charged with interference with commerce by robbery and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violance. The gun discharged during the robbery.
The armed robbery count is charged under the federal Hobbs Act, which makes it a crime to obstruct, delay or affect interstate commercy by robbery.
Grant was ordered held without bail.
