Italian police Thursday charged an American woman with negligent homicide and abandonment in the death of her 1-year-old daughter. Naomi Salinas has been placed under house arrest in the death of Brooke Salinas and is not allowed to leave Italy, said Lt. Chris Servello, spokesman for Naval Force Europe/6th Fleet.

Details surrounding Brooke’s April 24 death remain unclear as officials have yet to release the cause. Brooke either died of asphyxiation, possibly from a pre-existing health condition, or possibly drowned in a bathtub, though it appears there was no water in her lungs, a Navy official said.

Base officials have been cooperating with Italian officials in the ongoing investigation. The U.S. Navy has provided Salinas with Italian legal representation.

Brooke’s father, Petty Office 3rd Class Miguel Salinas, is with security at Naval Base, Gaeta.
