RAF ALCONBURY, England — A sailor convicted Wednesday of kidnapping, sexual assault and impersonating a Navy investigator was sentenced to three years behind bars Thursday.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Christopher A. Byard, 20, also was dropped to the rank of E-1, sentenced to a forfeiture of pay and received a dishonorable discharge.

Byard was found guilty after a three-day court martial that stemmed from a Nov. 19, 2005, incident in which he abducted a female airman first class by saying he was an investigator from the Naval Investigative Criminal Service.

The victim willingly followed Byard to his room because he had information about an affair she had earlier in the year. According to testimony, once in his room, Byard held the victim for four hours, during which he sexually assaulted her.

Byard served in the United Kingdom with the Navy Information Operations Detachment at RAF Molesworth, England.
