RAF MILDENHALL — An alcohol awareness day last week was meant to highlight the dangers of alcohol abuse.
“Hopefully, we’ll catch a few people’s attention,” said Jack Gladd, a personnel security specialist with the 100th Security Forces Squadron, who coordinated the event on Aug. 23.
The one-day event had representatives from the security forces squadron, Suffolk and Norfolk constabularies, 48th Medical Group and the Airmen Against Drunk Driving program, who provided information, hands-on displays and statistics of the effects of alcohol use in the local area.
Statistics were the main reasons to create this initial alcohol awareness day, Gladd said. He hopes other bases will host similar events.
Since the beginning of fiscal 2006, the RAF Mildenhall community has had 26 alcohol-related incidents, including 10 drunken driving charges. At RAF Lakenheath, there has been 20 alcohol-related incidents and 11 drunken driving charges.
“We want to reduce these stats,” Gladd said.
