Two airmen assigned to the 31st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron were injured this week in a homemade-fireworks accident.

One airman lost a hand and the other suffered injuries to a leg in the incident, which occurred Monday in a field near Polcenigo, Italy, according to Capt. Jennifer Ferrau, chief of public affairs for the 31st Fighter Wing.

Neither airman was identified by the wing.

The airmen reportedly were taken by Italian residents to nearby medical facilities following the incident. An official at the local hospital in Pordenone said Wednesday that the facility does not release medical information about its patients.

Ferrau said Italian and military authorities are investigating.

It was not known whether the airmen had made the fireworks themselves.
