OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea — A senior airman was given a dishonorable discharge Saturday and sentenced to one year in prison, a reduction in rank to E-1 and forfeiture of all future military pay for encouraging another airman to allegedly rape a sleeping woman in her dorm room last February.

Senior Airman Gabriel R. Contreras, 23, stood expressionless Saturday afternoon as the sentence was read. It took the seven-member panel 20 hours to find him guilty of rape, conspiracy to commit an indecent act and housebreaking, and another seven hours to determine his sentence. They found him not guilty of indecent assault, and Contreras pleaded guilty to committing an indecent act.

According to court testimony, Contreras, a member of Osan’s 51st Munitions Squadron, had consensual sex with the woman in her dorm room after a night of drinking. The woman fell asleep, and Contreras encouraged a third airman to come in her room and for a sexual threesome, according to testimony.

That airman, Senior Airman Joshua L. Amundson, will be tried in a separate court-martial.

Prosecutors said that even though Contreras didn’t rape the woman, he was responsible for it happening because he told Amundson to go into her room and have sex with her.

“Personally, I think he’s more culpable. It wouldn’t have been possible without him," said prosecutor Capt. Amber Hirsch. “He violated her trust. He really did feed her up (to Amundson) — ‘Here you go, have at her.’”

Contreras, who did not testify, pleaded guilty to the indecent act when the trial began Tuesday, because he touched the woman’s genitals as Amundson looked on, a crime under U.S. military law. He pleaded not guilty to all other charges.
