URUMA, Okinawa — Okinawa police say they arrested the husband of an Air Force servicemember Wednesday for allegedly beating to death his 8-year-old stepson at their off-base home in Uruma City.

Robert E. Deleon, 25, whose wife is assigned to Kadena Air Base, was taken into custody at 10:38 a.m. at Uruma police station, according to a police spokesman. He said Deleon showed up earlier at the station voluntarily for questioning.

Deleon is suspected of assaulting his stepson, Jordan D. Peterson, between 7:30 a.m. and 12:34 p.m. on April 11, the spokesman said. According to the police report, Deleon called his wife at work around noon, telling her that the boy was not breathing. The 29-year-old wife sped home, with a military ambulance following.

Police did not divulge the wife’s name.

The boy was taken to the U.S. Naval Hospital on Camp Lester, where he was pronounced dead at 1:56 p.m., the spokesman said. The cause of the death was blood loss from injuries to internal organs, according to the report.

Deleon denied the accusation, the spokesman said.

“However, it is obvious that a tremendous amount of external pressure was inflicted on the boy,” the spokesman said.

On the day of the incident, Deleon’s wife had left for work, leaving only her husband, his stepson and his 10-year-old stepdaughter at home, the spokesman said.

Police forwarded a charge of bodily injuries resulting in death against Deleon to the Naha District Public Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday, the spokesman said.

“This is a tragic incident and the base is fully cooperating with the local Japanese authorities,” said Maj. Dani Johnson, chief of the 18th Wing Public Affairs Office at Kadena.
