AVIANO, Italy — An Air Force noncommissioned officer and his pregnant wife were killed early Friday evening near Aviano Air Base when their vehicle collided with a truck, according to Italian media accounts.

Michael Knight, 35, and his wife, Laura, 32, were driving toward the small town of Roverto in Piano when the accident occurred, according to reports.

Michael Knight died on impact, while his wife, who was six months pregnant, died soon after at nearby Udine University Hospital, according to the Agenzia Giornalistica Italia, an Italian news agency.

The couple’s 3-year-old son, who was traveling in the back seat of the vehicle, suffered a broken arm, according to reports.

Representatives from Aviano Air Base and U.S. Air Forces Europe could not be reached for confirmation of the accident Sunday. Italian media accounts are unclear as to Michael Knight’s exact rank, stating that he was a “sergeant in technical services” at Aviano.

Il Gazzettino, a newspaper that covers the nearby city of Pordenone, reported that the accident occurred at 5:15 p.m. Friday.
