Look, there’s nothing wrong with a pint of lager. It’s cool and delicious and the perfect complement to any lazy afternoon. But as the temps creep into the 80s here in the British summertime, a pint can sometimes not beat the heat as a grown-up "bevvy" should.

For those days when beer just isn’t an option, a Pimms Cup is hard to beat. The consummately British liqueur is served over ice, sometimes with lemonade and always with loads of fruit and mint leaves. Cool.

But some places don’t do cocktails justice, so when seeking out a Pimms, look no further than The Snug, a hip bistro in the heart of Cambridge.

Just down the road from Parker’s Piece, The Snug is a cool mix of quality drinks and good food, according to head barman Rob Clough.

Clough prides himself on specialty cocktails, or standard ones like the Pimms Cup, each made with the freshest of ingredients. At about 5 pounds a drink, this isn’t the place to hunker down for the long haul, but summertime doesn’t get much better than when you are sitting on the patio and watching the world go by as a cold drink condenses in front of you.

"Everything’s done to spec here," Clough said, adding that a cocktail’s quality won’t vary by bartender. "You go to a lot of different bars and every bartender will do something different."

Other unique cocktails worth checking out include the excellent French 75, a delicate combination of gin, lemon juice and champagne.

The Snug has been open for about three years and features live music, ranging from indie rock to jazz, on Sundays and Tuesdays.

The food is pretty good, too. Of particular tastiness are the burgers, including the intensely delicious breakfast burger, basically an English breakfast atop a chunk of ground Angus beef.

Then there’s the Double Trouble, a 14-ounce beast of a burger slathered with bacon and cheese. So come hungry.

The Snug is a diverse eatery, drinkery or gathering point just waiting for you to come spend a few summertime hours. These days of long light and warm temperatures will be gone soon enough.

"The Snug slogan is ‘Something for Everyone,’ " Clough said. "That explains it."
