After Foal Eagle, Sasebo crews visit S. Korea
With last month’s annual exercise behind them, sailors and Marines have come down the gangplanks of three Navy ships to check out South Korea.
The USS Essex and USS Juneau arrived in Busan and the USS Tortuga sailed into Chinhae, a city famous for its spring cherry blossom festival. The ships ported on Wednesday.
The vessels are part of the Essex Amphibious Ready Group out of Sasebo Naval Base, Japan. They participated in the annual Foal Eagle exercise. The group’s embarked Marines are with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit from Okinawa.
Those touring Busan have visited Bulguksa Temple, Tumulus Park and the national museum, Lt. j.g. Jessica Gandy, a Navy spokeswoman in Seoul, said Friday.
Sailors and Marines also had the option of heading north with tours to Seoul or to Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, an installation whose nearby Shinjang shopping district is a popular destination for many U.S. servicemembers.
