A U.S. service member died in a noncombat-related incident in Djibouti on Thursday, the military said.
The cause of death is under investigation, Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa said in a statement. The largest U.S. base on the continent, Camp Lemmonier, is located in Djibouti’s capital city.
“Further information will be released as appropriate,” the command said. ”It is CJTF-HOA policy to defer casualty identification procedures to relevant national authorities after the next of kin have been notified.”
More than 4,000 U.S. and allied troops and military civilian employees are serving in Djibouti, the bulk of them in the capital city’s Camp Lemmonier, the largest permanent U.S. base in Africa.
