AFN chief to discuss changes
American Forces Network Europe commander Lt. Col. Scott Malcom is going on the air Wednesday to field listeners’ questions and discuss changes to the network’s music channel.
Malcom will appear on his network’s Open Line show Wednesday at 10 a.m. on the channel, “The Eagle.”
“The Eagle” already has made some changes and is running ads about a change to its midday disc jockey lineup.
Nearly two dozen changes are planned, the result of a listener survey conducted last year and discussions with other radio industry professionals.
“Some of the big things are easy to spot,” Malcom said.
For example, the station has dropped the tag line “Music worth fighting for,” he said. “These are things that to the loyal listeners of AFN would be quite obvious.”
Leah Ortiz will take over the 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. midday show from Sean Patrick. “She’s the best we got,” Malcom said.
The network is also streamlining operations to make more time for music programming and upping the amount of live radio. Other changes, such as changes in technology, won’t be so obvious.
“Bottom line is that we put a lot of work into improving the sound of Eagle radio,” Malcom said. “We really like the way it sounds and we’re excited about telling people about it.”
He said he’ll also field questions about AFN’s television programming and discuss changes to the network’s AM radio service — The Power Network. “Hopefully, our focus is going to be on radio,” he said.
Listeners can call in during the show by dialing DSN 389-4590 or civilian 0621-46085-590. They can also e-mail questions to openline.afne.army.mil.
