RAF LAKENHEATH, England — The 48th Fighter Wing has issued an advisory about planned protests in London on Sunday.
The National Guantanamo Coalition will hand out leaflets calling for the closure of the U.S. detention center in Cuba at locations throughout central London starting at 10:30 a.m. The demonstration will culminate at the U.S. Embassy at 3 p.m. with a host of speakers including politicians, religious leaders, artists and other activists, according to the coalition’s Web site.
The military’s advisory recommends all military members, dependents and Department of Defense employees avoid the event, but stops short of direct prohibition.
“Past demonstrations have been billed as media events involving a very elaborate ‘street theatre’ with demonstrators wearing prisoner and military uniforms,” it stated.
Some members of the activist group will be dressed in orange jumpsuits as they speak to the public and film the demonstration, which is targeted at the general public as well as U.S. President-elect Barack Obama and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the coalition’s Web site states.
Demonstrators will be at the following sites at the following times:
