During meetings with officials from Yamato City, the community outside Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Navy leaders mentioned the 7th Fleet Band was looking for new places to perform for local communities.

City leaders took them up on the offer and invited the band to perform at the annual Winter Fair, one of Yamato City’s brightest functions.

The festival will be held all day Sunday outside Yamato Station, on the Odakyu Enoshima and Sotetsu line near the Atsugi base.

The daytime winter festival will end with the tree-lighting festival. The 7th Fleet Band Jazz Combo with vocalist will join other bands and a gospel choir during the event, according to city officials.

Yamato business leaders created the festival and organize it each year. This is the first time the Navy’s band was invited to play, city officials said.

Navy leaders from Atsugi and Yokosuka are scheduled to attend, as is Yamato Mayor Kimiyasu Tsuchiya. The two groups have had differences in the past — Yamato city has petitioned Atsugi and other military officials to stop jet flights over the city, particularly at night.

In October, Japanese and U.S. leaders announced plans to move the jets to Iwakuni as part of a force transformation plan.

Sunday’s lighting is scheduled for 6:10 p.m.

The band is scheduled to perform holiday, jazz and pop music at the East Side Promenade from 5:20 to 5:50 p.m. and 7:40 to 8:30 p.m.
