The 723rd Air Mobility Squadron at Ramstein Air Base in Germany will case its colors at the end of the month and split into two new squadrons.

The squadron, one of numerous units around Europe that falls under the command of the 721st Air Mobility Operations Group, is commanded by Lt. Col. Vernon Lucas. Lucas will assume command of the 721st Aerial Port Squadron in a ceremony on Aug. 26 at Hangar 5. Maj. Todd Cook will take over the 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron in the same ceremony, which begins at 10 a.m. Col. Joe Herron, the 721st AMOG commander, will officiate.

The 723rd currently boasts more than 800 airmen and the split will allow the two squadrons to concentrate on particular areas of operation at Ramstein, one of the world’s busiest military airports.

The move isn’t expected to change the number of Air Mobility Command airmen assigned to Ramstein.
