The 5-year-old son of a Stuttgart, Germany-based staff sergeant was killed in a car accident Saturday morning, officials say.

Lucas Brewer was in a vehicle driven by his father, Staff Sgt. Brian Brewer with the 52nd Signal Battalion, on A81 headed for Würzburg, according LeAnne N. MacAllister, a public affairs officer for the 5th Signal Command.

Brian Brewer was in the left lane to pass a car, saw a fast-moving car approach behind him and tried to get out of the way, said MacAllister, citing a German police report.

He veered back the right lane and his vehicle went off the road, flipped, and hit several trees, she said. The crash happened at about 9 a.m.

His son was strapped in the seat in the back, MacAllister said. Brian Brewer was treated at a hospital in Möckmühl but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Lucas Brewer’s mother, Irene, was with his sister, Katharina, on a trip with the USO.

Funeral plans were not available as of Saturday evening.
