Americans appreciate one-stop shopping runs.

In that spirit of convenience, organizations across the 414th Base Support Battalion will congregate under one roof Saturday to provide information to members of the Hanau military community.

For the second successive year, the 414th BSB is hosting an Information-Connection Fair. Soldiers, spouses, civilians and children will have the opportunity to ask questions of experts and receive handouts and brochures on a wide array of issues.

“This is one of the best events we have for the community,” said Silvia Berglund, the support battalion’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation director.

Last year, a similar fair drew upwards of 2,000 people, Berglund said. With the majority of troops deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Berglund is expecting a turnout of roughly a third of that number.

Attendees will get a chance to see the newly remodeled International Club, which is now called the International Community Activities Center. Located on Fliegerhorst Casern in Hanau, the event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fair will include many familiar organizations: the Department of Defense Dependents Schools, the Army and Air Force Exchange Service and an assortment of experts on issues ranging from finance and law to animals and bus routes. There also will be a craft show, wine tasting, Polish pottery for sale, and games and events for kids.

One of the most popular stops will likely be the Army Community Service’s deployment table.

Michael Hamm, the local ACS Family Outreach coordinator, said he expects plenty of questions concerning the return of troops. Hamm will do his best to answer those questions — the best guess is April, community officials say — but he’ll also take the time to talk about the support programs available to family members and soldiers.

“We’re not going to go really deep into it,” Hamm said of the programs.

That’s not what the fair is about, at least not on the surface.

But like the weekend shopper with limited aisle time, the idea of this fair is to get the wheels turning.

When the soldiers return, Berglund said, “What will we do to prepare?”
