August 24, 2008
CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A $4,000 reward is being offered for information about a fire on Camp Schwab last week that caused some $350,000 damage to vehicles at the base motor pool.
The reward is offered by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, according to a Marine Corps response to a Stars and Stripes query.
The reward is for information "leading to the apprehension and conviction of the person(s) responsible for this incident," 2nd Lt. Kurt Stahl, media relations officer for Marine Corps Bases Japan, said in an e-mail.
Anyone with information is asked to call NCIS at DSN 623-4593.
The fire was first spotted by residents who live near the base fence line and was reported to the base fire department at 3 a.m. on Aug. 15.
Firefighters had the blaze extinguished 15 minutes after they arrived, base officials said.
The residents said the fire burned for about an hour and involved several explosions.
The blaze destroyed five vehicles and damaged eight others, Stahl said. He did not release any other information.
"As a matter of Department of Defense policy, we cannot release details about an ongoing investigation or speculate on the cause of the fire," he said.
