BAGHDAD — A group of soldiers crouched on the sidewalk, muzzles pointed in all directions at the base of an apartment building in the Adhamiyah neighborhood of Baghdad, just across the bridge from Sadr City.

The men, from 3rd Platoon, Company C, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division out of Schweinfurt, Germany, were hunting for a sniper Monday after a deadly attack hit a different unit earlier in the day. A single shot had rung out near the apartment buildings, killing a soldier.

Sniper attacks against U.S. forces are common in this part of northeast Baghdad, where the Shiite-dominated Sadr City rubs up against the Sunni-heavy Adhamiyah sector, but the perpetrators are often nearly impossible to find, soldiers in Company C said.

Members of the 3rd Platoon, with cover from Humvees and Bradley fighting vehicles, entered several nearby apartment buildings looking for clues, but no evidence of the shooter was found.

Pfc. Naryan Curtis, 19, from Versailles, Ohio, left, and fellow members of 3rd Platoon, Company C, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, prepare to enter an apartment building Monday in the Adhamiyah neighborhood of Baghdad. Soldiers searched the building for clues after a sniper killed a soldier from another unit. Pfc. Joshua Reyes, right, and Pfc. Naryan Curtis, both with the 3rd Platoon, Company C, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, respond to a noise Monday while clearing the upper floor of an apartment building in the Adhamiyah neighborhood. After searching two other apartment buildings with no sign of the sniper, Sgt. Oscar Gonzalez, left, provides cover for a staircase while Pfc. Joshua Reyes, right, and Pfc. Naryan Curtis prepare to clear the upper floor of a third building. Pfc. Eduardo Rodriguez, 22, from San Gabriel, Calif., provides cover after soldiers searched several buildings for signs of a sniper. A soldier from another unit had been fatally shot in the border area between Sadr City and the Ahdamiyah neighborhood of Baghdad.
