36th Wing on Guam celebrates new designation
The 36th Wing at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, celebrated its new name Wednesday with formations and a redesignation ceremony.
Formerly the 36th Air Base Wing, with the temporary designation of Air Expeditionary Wing, the 36th Wing’s new name indicates it has gone from being an entity with a specific mission to something more general and permanent — a wing is the Air Force’s “basic unit for generating and employing combat capability,” according to an Air Force fact sheet.
“Andersen is increasing in importance,” Maj. Gen. Edward Rice, 13th Air Force commander, said at the ceremony. “This location gives us great flexibility to deploy and employ our forces throughout the Pacific. We’ll take maximum advantage of it being at the tip of the strategic triangle that includes Alaska and Hawaii.”
