Support our mission

VICENZA, Italy — The 22nd Area Support Group is giving community members a chance to show support for deployed members of the community — and get a free lunch.

Support Our Troops Day is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Hoekstra Field on Caserma Ederle.

AFN-Vicenza will offer a live radio broadcast from the event and will tape video greetings from family members that it will forward to deployed soldiers in Iraq. Some families have already been receiving taped greetings from the deployed soldiers.

The Morale, Welfare and Recreation department will sponsor a lunch, serving hamburgers, hot dogs and more. Free face painting for children will be offered and the community’s Easter egg hunt (for up to age 9) starts at 11.

The Family Assistance Center and representatives from the 173rd Airborne Brigade’s rear detachment will also be present to answer questions.

More than 1,000 members of the Vicenza-based 173rd are currently serving in northern Iraq, along with members of the 14th Transportation Battalion and other soldiers stationed on base.

After a logistical delay, it’s now possible for those troops to receive mail. But only for specific servicemembers. Mail can be sent to the soldier in care of the brigade, APO AE 09347. Care packages for “any soldier” are still prohibited by Department of Defense regulations, and there are prohibitions from sending any of the three P’s (pork, pornography and pyrotechnics) as well as alcohol.
