The number of suicides among active-duty Marines fell in 2010, a downward trend that continued into the New Year with the Marine Corps recording only two suicides during January.

The two Marines, a private and a staff sergeant, hanged themselves, according to the January suicide report.

The low number of January suicides continued a trend in 2010, during which only 37 active-duty Marines committed suicide,—a 29 percent drop from a record high of 52 in 2009.

But the numbers were not uniformly positive: The Marine Corps recorded 15 reported suicide attempts in January. And last year, there were 173 attempted suicides, up from 164 in 2009.
