The Morale Welfare Recreation youth sports program at Sasebo Naval Base, Japan, was named one of the best in the nation in 2009 by the National Alliance for Youth Sports, a Florida-based nonprofit advocacy group for recreation.

The award, given since 2000, recognizes sports programs doing a superior job of providing diverse activities and safe, positive experiences for children, parents and coaches, according to the group’s Web site.

Other winners this year were Andrews Air Force Base, Md.; Huntersville, N.C.; U.S. Army Garrison West Point, N.Y.; and Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Calif.

A committee judged applicants based on how they educate administrators, volunteer coaches, game officials and parents and how well they embrace a sports philosophy "aimed at providing a positive and safe experience for all youth."
