NAPLES, Italy — A Sigonella-based U.S. sailor died Sunday after his motorcycle struck a roadside guardrail near Mineo, Sicily, according to a Navy release.

The sailor, assigned to the U.S. 6th Fleet Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Eight, was pronounced dead at the scene by Italian emergency medical personnel. There were no other individuals involved in the accident, according to the release.

The sailor’s name and other information are being withheld until the Navy notifies the sailor’s next-of-kin.

U.S. Navy and Italian officials are investigating the incident.
