A security forces senior airman assigned to Volkel Air Base, Netherlands, was killed last weekend after crashing his motorcycle, U.S. Air Forces in Europe officials announced this week.
On May 23, Darin Stark was driving in Zeelandsedijk, Netherlands,when around 3:30 p.m. he hit a tree while apparently trying to avoid another vehicle that pulled out in front of him, according to Air Force officials.
Stark was airlifted by helicopter to Nijmegen hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour after the accident.
An Air Force spokeswoman at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, said the cause of the crash is under investigation by Dutch authorities.
A memorial service was held Tuesday at Volkel for Stark, she said.
He is survived by his wife.
Stark was assigned to the 703rd Munitions Support Squadron at Volkel, a remote unit of the 52nd Fighter Wing Security Forces at Spangdahlem.
Stark was posthumously promoted to staff sergeant.
He was a high achiever, having recently graduated first in his class at Airman Leadership School and earning the John Levitow Award as the class’s top performer.
Recently selected for promotion to staff sergeant, Stark was to sew on his new rank Monday.
