Europe-based motorists who purchase fuel through the Army and Air Force Exchange Service will see a double-digit increase for unleaded gas this weekend as prices go up for the fourth straight week, officials said.

For example, prices for regular unleaded in Germany increase Saturday by 12.6 cents a gallon. In addition, the cost of diesel will go up 5.7 cents a gallon, marking the third week in a row for diesel increase.

Regular unleaded in Germany will be $2.64 a gallon; midgrade will be $2.756 a gallon; and premium $2.87 a gallon. Diesel will run motorists $2.497 a gallon.

The price hikes mirror increases in stateside prices. And with oil and gasoline prices hitting a high for the year Wednesday, prices could climb again next week.

Retail gasoline prices in the United States have gone up 19 percent in the past month, according to The Associated Press. However a month’s worth of higher pump prices didn’t seem to deter the recent holiday travelers — at least not in the States. Although gas prices climbed to six-month highs, it wasn’t enough to deter 27 million Americans from hitting the road in the days leading up to the Memorial Day holiday weekend, according to AAA, the national and international driver’s club.

And while summer travelers can expect to see the typical boost in pump prices that accompanies the onset of the travel season, experts don’t expect the huge increases that motorists saw last year.

Poor unemployment rates, housing data and retail sales are all factors that experts predict will keep crude oil prices in check, AAA reported.

According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, analysts predict gas prices should be nearing their peak for the year.

"It would take a geopolitical disaster, an earthquake or major hurricane damage to drive prices much higher than they are now," said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst for the Oil Price Information Service in Wall, N.J., in the Times report.
