Dozens of reunions took place this week as newly arrived personnel at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey started picking up their personal vehicles again.
First Lt. Nicholas Plante, chief of public affairs for the 39th Air Base Wing, said Thursday in an e-mail message that an agreement had been worked out with Turkish customs officials over a dispute that held up the cars.
Twenty-five vehicles had been picked up by their owners on Tuesday, he wrote.
According to Plante’s e-mail, Col. Philip McDaniel, the wing commander, said the agreement was reached "… with the understanding that certain new procedures will be implemented once training and equipment was received."
Plante said in a phone interview that he wasn’t aware of what those procedures were and McDaniel wasn’t available for an interview.
Base officials disagreed with new restrictions imposed by local Turkish officials that included requiring the vehicles to be placed in storage while the owner was out of the country and charging a $5 daily fee for the storage.
Personnel also would be required to present more paperwork before leaving the country.
The base decided to hold onto the vehicles until an agreement could be reached.
