BAMBERG, Germany — A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ledward Barracks chapel in Schweinfurt for a Schweinfurt-based soldier who was killed in Iraq, the U.S. Army Garrison Schweinfurt said.

Army Spc. David A. Schaefer Jr., 27, of Belleville, Ill., died Sunday in Baghdad of wounds suffered when a roadside bomb detonated near his unit. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 172nd Infantry Brigade, the Defense Department said.
