PYEONGTAEK, South Korea — The life preservers and poolside umbrellas are laid out, the barbecued ribs will be ready and the admission will be free when Camp Humphreys throws open its Splish and Splash Water Park this Friday through Tuesday for Memorial Day weekend.

Also laid on by way of poolside fun for the big weekend are relay races, a cannonball competition, and an event where participants have to jump from the diving board and fill up punch bowls by splashing water into them, said Mike Ross, chief of the community operations division with U.S. Army Garrison-Humphreys Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

Water park hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the next two weeks, but once school closes the park will close at 8 p.m., he said.

Admission is free for U.S. and Korean USFK ID card holders; guests without such cards will be charged $3, Ross said.

Starting May 27, regular admission will be charged.

This weekend, the water park also debuts its expanded snack bar menu, which will feature fried chicken, pizza and barbecued ribs, Ross said.

Patrons are not allowed to bring their own food or beverages, he said.

The children’s pool will be closed through the holiday weekend because of construction on a new 30-foot-by-70-foot wading and training pool, Ross said. Two other pools will be open to kids and adults this weekend.

Under water park rules, parents must sign a responsibility statement when bringing children 12 or younger to the park. The form asks them to keep children 5 and younger "within arm’s reach."

Parents must make sure that kids who are poor swimmers or can’t swim use life jackets when in the 50-meter lap pool.

"‘You have to pass a test or you gotta wear a vest’ is the cliché," Ross said.

The water park will remain open through the summer and close Sept. 8, the Tuesday after Labor Day, Ross said.
