CAMP RED CLOUD, South Korea — Maj. Gen. John W. Morgan III soon will leave his position as commanding general of the 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea to become chief of staff of the U.S. European Command in Germany, the Pentagon has announced.

Morgan has served in his current position since November 2007, having previously been the assistant chief of staff, C-3/J-3, U.N. Command/Combined Forces Command/U.S. Forces Korea/deputy commanding general for the 8th U.S. Army.

He will replace Maj. Gen. P.K. Ken Keen. It was previously announced that Maj. Gen. Michael S. Tucker, a two-star general who is deputy chief of staff for operations for the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, will take command of the 2nd ID.

Morgan was unavailable for comment Wednesday, according to Maj. Vince Mitchell, the 2nd ID’s public affairs officer. "At this time, we don’t know when Maj. Gen. Morgan will be departing the 2ID," he said.

According to his Army biography, Morgan was commissioned in 1979. He holds a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies from the National Defense University.

He has served as liaison officer, United Army Weapons Support Detachment, 8th Army in the early 1980s, and in 2004-05 was assistant division commander (maneuver), 1st Infantry Division, U.S. Army Europe and 7th Army, Germany, and for Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq.

Among other assignments announced Tuesday by the Department of Defense, Brig. Gen. Charles W. Hooper, defense attache in Beijing, will become deputy director for strategic planning and policy, J-5, U.S. Pacific Command at Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii.
