NAPLES — Erratic driving aside, one might find it hard to believe that something could be amiss in Naples’ driving schools.

Naples police busted a ring of driving school operators accused of feeding correct answers, via walkie-talkies, to students taking tests at a driving school on Via Argine in the city’s Ponticelli neighborhood, an official said.

Police were able to catch four people — two instructors and two students — red-handed during a raid Thursday.

"There are probably many more who are cheating, but these were four who weren’t able to get rid of the evidence before we caught them," said a police officer from the Sangiovani Barra police station. He declined to provide his name because, he said, he was not authorized to speak to news media.

Police arrested two Neapolitan instructors, a 28-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man; and two Bangladeshi students, ages 33 and 39, according to a story in the Neapolitan daily Il Napoli. The police agent confirmed the information.

The instructors in cahoots with the students allegedly recommended that the test takers get at least a few of the 10 true/false questions incorrect (in order to elude suspicion). Erring on four or more means automatic failure.

Students apparently ignored the suggestions, and in their quest for perfect scores, drew the attention of other school officials and the subsequent focus of police.

As police raided the school, students ditched the devices they were using to hear correct answers transmitted from some instructors — who provided the service for an additional fee, the police officer said, declining to specify the fee.

Police confiscated about 50 walkie-talkies during Thursday’s raid, he said.
