Adding nutrition to the curriculum at Kaiserslautern Middle School has earned the campus a Blue Apple Health Education Award.

The school and nine schools in the United States were recognized with the award from the American Association for Health Education. Kaiserslautern was honored for a program partnered with the Defense Commissary Agency that teaches sixth-graders about nutrition and healthy eating habits.

Principal Susan Hargis credited her teachers for putting the Food for Thought program together and incorporating nutrition lessons into all of the subjects that sixth-graders learn. It includes trips to the commissary.

"My reaction was I was just proud of my teachers and I was proud of my students," Hargis said. "We are taking it worldwide. We are going to offer it to the other (Department of Defense Dependents) schools."
